The Historic National Road is the theme for a new book by David Alan Badger. The self-taught artist from Havana, Illinois has penned 8,000 drawings of Illinois architecture over the last twenty-seven years. Tentatively titled Recipes from the Historic National Road, it is the first cookbook dedicated to "the road that built the nation.

Badger began work on the National Road book in early February which combines a series of drawings and recipes to create a "taste of the region. The author is contacting businesses and other interested parties about the project which has been endorsed by the National Road Association of Illinois. Each business that purchases 24 copies of the book wholesale may submit a recipe and receive, in return, the original pen and ink drawing (copyright free) of their business and be featured in two pages of the publication.

Sheila Martin, National Road Association of Illinois board president, said, "A book of this magnitude is as unique as the National Road. Combining our historic architecture with the original flare of Midwestern dishes we've all been raised on and love, David Alan Badger is creating a book that I personally look forward to reading.

John Goldsmith, National Road executive director for Illinois, believes the book will attract visitors to the road. "Promoting tourism, Goldsmith pointed out, "is one of the National Road Association's primary goals. Recipes from the Historic National Road could potentially draw attention to all of our communities from Marshall to East St. Louis.

Badger plans to feature books on each of the state's seven scenic byways. Recipes from the Meeting of the Great Rivers was released in May 2008. Each book takes up to four months to complete but the artist has even loftier goals. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's body of work totaling over 20,000 original drawings, Badger has set that milestone as his ultimate plateau.
